Here’s why I am a celebrant.

Getting married represents a high point in any relationship and it all comes together on one chosen day - the Wedding Day - in front of the most important people in our lives: friends and family.

In this sense, it is a very rare event indeed, a gathering of select people all in the one place at the same time, present for the sole purpose of supporting and sharing in the celebration of two people declaring their intention to be together forever.

Given the rarity of an occasion like this in most of our lives, it is an event that is steeped in poignancy and symbolism and, unsurprisingly, generates much emotion from all present, none more so than the bride and groom.

It is this aspect that I find most fulfilling and, at the same time, humbling, as a wedding celebrant, to not just be a part of such a special moment in two people's lives, but to have the privilege of facilitating the union of two people in marriage.

We are not a culture known universally for the ease with which we express our feelings. At weddings, though, these emotions catch up on us and it becomes an experience that unites us.

The moment when two people decide and plan to declare to the world that they are in love and will remain so in an exclusive relationship for the rest of their lives is such a momentous occasion. We all know what they are feeling, we're all happy for them and we are genuinely sharing in their happiness.

It might be empathy or friendship or love that we feel for the couple or it could be a broader realisation that we're all in this together, in this world and in this life.

Testimonials

“Phil was our celebrant this weekend and we can't speak highly enough about him. Patient, stylish, articulate and creative - he made our ceremony magical and all about us. We considered a number of celebrants but so pleased we chose Phil.” - Kylie and David, The Boatshed, Wellington

Your Day

The beauty and true magic of a wedding is that nothing will go according to plan unless, right at the outset, we put into words precisely what our ambition is, what our hopes are, what the goal is, and how serious we are about it.

We partner with someone because we love them, and at some point, as humanity has always done, we want to say this out loud - to shout it to the world, to our families, to our friends. Mostly, though, we want to affirm that vow to the person we want to be with forever.

I believe that marriage, in many ways, is our biggest undertaking in life (even mortgages only last 25-30yrs!), so why in the world wouldn't we want to declare our intentions with pride to everyone and bask in all of the support and congratulations that come with it?

So, let's get your wedding day absolutely right. My promise as a celebrant is to make it seamless, enjoyable, profound and meaningful. Frankly, it's the least I can do to honour both the occasion and the trust you have placed in me.

Let’s make your day unforgettable.

The Process

The Initial Consultation

I'll talk you through your legal obligations, and then we can discuss options for how I can assist. This includes the writing of vows, Marriage Certificates, my involvement on the day and the unique details of your ceremony.

The Marriage Licence

You will need to apply for your Marriage Licence from the Department of Internal Affairs within three months of your actual wedding day. The paperwork accompanying this is handed to me, from which point it becomes my responsibility. I will provide a reminder before this three month period begins to ensure it happens on time.

The Wedding Rehearsal

Best held as close to the actual ceremony date as possible, often the day before. I am an advocate of rehearsals as they encourage greater fluidity on your wedding day. I will make contact two months prior to your wedding to discuss rehearsal options.

The Wedding Day

I will be in close contact with you leading up to the date to ensure there are no last minute changes that can affect the legality of your Marriage Licence. I will arrive in plenty of time to go over the details again, and to check everything is in order and to prepare for the ceremony.

Post-Wedding

I will send out a reminder that you can apply for a copy of the Certificate of Marriage (they aren't provided as a matter of course). This also provides final written documentation that the wedding paperwork has been received and processed by the Department of Internal Affairs.

Involvement

This is your special day and my level of involvement is entirely up to you.

Some couples prefer that I fill the role of ceremonial celebrant then fade into the background, while others have asked me to be MC for the entire day. With professional MC experience, I can assure a memorable experience for you and your guests.

Fees

My base rate for weddings in the Wellington area is $600, which includes up to two meetings and a rehearsal. For weddings outside the Wellington area, I will discuss pricing with you. Please contact me with your requirements and I will provide you with an obligation free quote.
